The Women Are Looking Back in Anger

After John Osborne

I do not sew. I write.
And who else do I want to be but me?
And being me is looking back at you
Being us is looking back at all of you.

In anger I am almost 26 like Osborne
Flames in my belly since twelve
Eyes dead sockets at twenty
Every woman is me, forty or sixty.

I cannot gulp the rage into my quiet
or it will gulp me first into its absence.
Who were these morons just now
saying, “Put down your head and sew”?
